The Dental College was founded in 1881, the first dentistry school west of the Mississippi.Together with the Colleges of Medicine (founded in 1864) and that of Pharmacy (founded in 1872 as the California College of Pharmacy), it made up the Affiliated Colleges of The Medical Department of the University of California (later the University of California, San Francisco). The school was founded in 1896 as the College of Physicians and Surgeons with programs in dentistry, medicine, and pharmacy. Faith Sai So Leong, also called Sai So Yeong, graduated from the College in 1904; she was the first Chinese-American woman to graduate from a school of dentistry and become a dentist in the United States, and the first woman of any race to graduate from the College.
