The station is part of the Dublin–Rosslare railway line. It is staffed and fully accessible. It consists of a single platform and passing loop. It had sidings, used in recent years by occasional permanent way trains. With the coming of the mini-CTC signalling system in April 2008, a passing loop was installed at the Dublin end of the station.

The station opened on 1 August 1906 [2] and closed on 18 September 2010. [3] The rail service was replaced by a revised Bus Éireann route 370 from Monday 20 September 2010: [4] Wexford Bus operate a shuttle bus service to Wexford and Kilmore Quay three times a day (two on Wednesday and no Sunday service). Redmond Square, near Wexford railway station, commemorates the elder John Edward Redmond (1806–1865) who sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom as a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for the city of Wexford. The inscription reads: "My heart is with the city of Wexford. Nothing can extinguish that love but the cold soil of the grave."
It is the only main line railway in the Republic not wholly owned by the State. [9] The Waterford to Rosslare section includes the Barrow Bridge, the longest rail bridge in Ireland. At the time of construction, the line from Waterford diverged at Killinick, allowing for direct Waterford to Wexford trains to bypass Rosslare Strand. [10]
