Anuradhapura was the capital of all the monarchs who ruled the country in the Anuradhapura kingdom, with the exception of Kashyapa I (473–491), who chose Sigiriya to be his capital. [12] The city is also marked on Ptolemy's world map .
Medawachchiya is a town in the Anuradhapura District, North Central Province of Sri Lanka. Situated 27 km from Anuradhapura , on the A9 Jaffna - Kandy main road, it is 229 km from Colombo . Medawachchiya is also the point from which the A14 main road to Mannar and Talaimannar starts.
The A9 passes Kekirawa and Maradankadawala, before reaching the Anuradhapura-area. The A13 highway at Galkulama and the A20 highway provide access to Anuradhapura. The A9 meets the A12 highway at Mihintale. The town of Medawachchiya provides connection to Mannar and the historic ferry to India, via the A14 highway.
It is situated around 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of the ancient city of Anuradhapura and 150 kilometres (93 mi) north east of Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Eppawala and its surroundings are located within a geological region of high-grade phosphate deposits – Sri Lanka's only phosphate deposits.

The sacred city of Anuradhapura exerted a considerable influence on the development of architecture in the country for several centuries. The city was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, it lies 205 km north of the current capital Colombo in the island's North Central Province , on the banks of the historic Malvathu Oya .
