With over 7 million square feet of floor space, India’s Surat Diamond Bourse has surpassed the Pentagon as the world’s largest office building, according to its architects.
The building has a total of 29 floors that span 453 feet (138 m). Cost are estimated to have been near US$387 million. It took approximately three years to erect. The goal was to bring together all office workers in Chicago who comprised the staff of the five buildings the company occupied previous to the construction of the Plaza.
When it opened in 1930, it was the world's largest building, with 4 million square feet (372,000 m 2) of floor space. [1] [2] The Art Deco structure is at the junction of the Chicago River's branches. The building is a leading retailing and wholesale location, hosting 20,000 visitors and tenants daily in the late 2000s. [needs update] [3] [4]
The building was converted by David L. Paul into condominium and office space between 1979 and 1984. Paul hired Lohan Associates, Inc. to be one of two architects. The design concept was Paul's. It is now home to 415 condo units divided amongst the building's three separate condominium associations: the Tower, the Lake, and the South residences.
