West Mansfield (officially the Village of West Mansfield) is a village located in Logan County, Ohio, United States. The population was 749 at the 2020 census. A branch of the Logan County District Library serves the West Mansfield community. [3] West Mansfield was laid out in 1848. [4] .

Descendants of slaves, who may have reached Ohio through the Underground Railroad, and other African Americans, formed the community of Flatwoods in the southwest part of Bokescreek Township. (A historical marker located in West Mansfield in Logan County, Ohio.)
Within a few years there was a new vantage point in downtown Mansfield from which to photograph views overlooking town: it was the clock tower of the Richland County courthouse. Standing far above the treetops in the sky next to Lady Justice, a photographer was able to capture this series of images in 1909.

This collection spans the history of Black families not only in Richland County, but also other counties, in documents and photos all by Dorothy Corley, who was the executrix of Daisy’s Estate in 1971.
Mansfield was first settled on a ridge by a large spring that eventually served as a dependable source of water for a brewery. In 1813, Mansfield was suspended on the very edge of the frontier and its settlers were regularly subject to Indian attack.
In the early 1950’s, the Library of Congress distributed one set for each state to a state land grant university, and Kent State was chosen to house this important collection.
