Fort Lewis began as Camp Lewis in 1917, when the citizens of Pierce County voted by an eight-to-one margin to bond themselves for $2,000,000 (equivalent to $49,085,714 in 2024) to buy 68,721 acres (107.377 sq mi; 278.10 km 2) of land.
