Mercedes-Benz (German pronunciation: [mɛʁˌtseːdəs ˈbɛnts,-dɛs-] ⓘ), [6] [7] commonly referred to simply as Mercedes and occasionally as Benz, is a German automotive brand that was founded in 1926. The Mercedes-Benz Group origin is in an Agreement of Mutual Interest signed on 1 May 1924 between Benz & Cie. (founded in 1883 by Carl Benz) and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (founded in 1890 by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach).
The name Mercedes was later used to represent DMG in another new brand name, Mercedes-Benz. This was created in 1926 when it was applied to all vehicles produced by the new company, Daimler-Benz AG , resulting from the merger of Benz & Cie. and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in that year.
Mercedes then became DMG's main car brand name. There were some small exceptions: the Mercedes Simplex of 1902–1909, (the name indicating it being "easy to drive") and the Mercedes Knight of 1910–1924, featuring Coventry Daimler's development of Charles Yale Knight's sleeve-valve engine. All models were priced by their hp-rating.
