The $236 million Mandalay Bay Convention Center opened on January 6, 2003, [4] [11] with 1,500,000 sq ft (140,000 m 2) of space. [ 4 ] [ 12 ] It was among the largest convention centers in the U.S., [ 13 ] and the second largest local facility, surpassed only by the Las Vegas Convention Center .
Surveys as of early 1972 showed that prior to the opening of the hospital, Dallas had six hospital beds per 1000 people, while eight cities of comparable size averaged just over 9.1 beds per 1000 people. [1] The 14-story, 367-bed hospital had 78 physicians on the medical staff and enough staff to care for an 85 percent occupancy rate.
In 2024, the hospital was ranked the following in specific specialties in the United States by ‘’Newsweek’’: [5] 32nd in Neurological; 34th in Cancer; 37th in Cardiac; In 2024 the hospital was also ranked as the top hospital in the Dallas-Fort Worth area by U.S. News & World Report. [6]
