Wind Creek State Park is a public recreation area located seven miles (11 km) south of Alexander City, Alabama, on the western side of Lake Martin, a 41,000-acre (17,000 ha) reservoir on the Tallapoosa River. The state park occupies 1,445 acres (585 ha) and is managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. [1]
DeSoto State Park, operated by the Alabama State Park System, is located within the preserve boundaries and has a lodge, restaurant, several campgrounds, and other facilities. There is a day-use area at the mouth of the canyon where a campground was once operated. The area provides places for picnics and is a popular swimming location.
The park opened in 1971. [2] [5] In 2015, Buck's Pocket lost its campground and its staffing as part of the closing and curtailment of services at several Alabama state parks following severe budget cuts. [6] The park reopened with a renovated campground and the addition of an 8-mile-long ORV (Off-Road Recreational Vehicle) trail in 2020. [7] [8]
The work is in addition to planned electrical and septic line upgrades and will cause park closures. Campsites 1-99 will close Aug. 23 to June 15, 2025.
