Friction, as from holster wear, quickly removes cold bluing, and also removes hot bluing, rust, or fume bluing over long periods of use. It is usually inadvisable to use cold bluing as a touch-up where friction is present. If cold bluing is the only practical option, the area should be kept oiled to extend the life of the coating as much as ...

However that's produced by a rolling mill, not by hand forging. It's somewhat resistant, and is very black. When wrought iron is hand-smithed, you'll also get something of a black oxide finish. When mild steel is smithed though, the scale produced isn't thick enough or strong enough to make a useful finish. Wax is always applied cold.
Phosphate conversion coating is a chemical treatment applied to steel parts that creates a thin adhering layer of iron, zinc, or manganese phosphates to improve corrosion resistance or lubrication or as a foundation for subsequent coatings or painting. [1] [2] [3] It is one of the most common types of conversion coating.
The NaOH (caustic soda) and elevated temperature cause Fe 3 O 4 (black oxide) to form on the surface of the metal instead of Fe 2 O 3 (red oxide; rust). While it is physically denser than red oxide, the fresh black oxide is porous, so oil is then applied as post treatment to the heated part, which seals it by "sinking" into it.

The resulting coated steel can be used in much the same way as uncoated. A typical hot-dip galvanizing line operates as follows: [2] Steel is cleaned using a caustic solution. This removes oil/grease, dirt, and paint. The caustic cleaning solution is rinsed off. The steel is pickled in an acidic solution to remove mill scale.
