During the California Gold Rush, the city was called Dry Diggins after the gold mining camp, but was known as Hangtown, as vigilantes ("Judge Lynch") hung many men for different types of crimes. During the Gold Rush, the site was Elstner's Hay Yard, next to the Jackass Inn. Hangtown was later renamed Placerville. [1] [2]
It is built on State Route 49 between Auburn and Placerville on a hill at an elevation more than 1,500 feet (450 m) in an area full of trees, trails, camping, and other recreational activities. The temperature ranges from 75° to 105 °F (23 °C to 41 °C) in the summer and 25° to 50 °F (-4 °C to 10 °C) in the winter.

It is located 13 miles (21 km) west-northwest of Placerville, [3] at an elevation of 1175 feet (358 m). [1] In 1849, mining commenced at Pilot Hill. [3] Originally, Centerville, Pilot Hill, and Pittsfield were separate nearby mining camps that unified under the name Centerville. [3] The post office came in 1854 and bestowed the name Pilot Hill. [3]
