The SAR Rifle, .30-06 caliber, RUGER, Model M77 is a rifle designed for use by Canada's search and rescue technicians (SAR Techs) and aircrews. The SAR Rifle is designed to be a compact survival rifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield. The rifle is based on the standard Ruger M77 Mk II rifle but the barrel has been shortened to 14.5 in (370 mm).
The rifle was discontinued in 1985 due to high production costs. [3] [5] Ruger does not offer any parts support for the Model 44. The Ruger Model 44 was replaced by the Ruger Deerfield carbine introduced in 2000 and produced until 2006. [5] The Deerfield is a brand new design and has little in common with the Model 44.
The Ruger 77/22 is a bolt-action rimfire rifle chambered for the .22 Long Rifle, .22 WMR, or .22 Hornet. It has a removable rotary magazine which allows the magazine to fit flush with the bottom of the stock. The 77/22 was introduced in 1983 and was based on the centerfire Model 77 Mark II. [3] Each rifle comes with scope rings and a lock.
While the Model 44 featured a solid-topped receiver, the modern Deerfield carbine has an open-top design more resembling the M1 carbine, [5] which is stronger and easier to make. [3] The Deerfield also uses a rotary magazine similar to that used on Ruger's .22 LR 10/22 rifle, [5] whereas the Model 44 was fed via a fixed 4-shot tubular magazine. [6]

This allowed Ruger to chamber the cartridge in their existing standard length M77 rifle, without needing to use their M77 Safari Magnum Rifle. While the .375 H&H Magnum is longer than the .375 Ruger, the latter cartridge has a 4% greater case capacity than the Holland & Holland cartridge, 99 gr. of water (6.42 cm 3 ) compared to the H&H's 95.
