Subud (pronounced ) is an international, interfaith spiritual movement that began in Indonesia in the 1920s, founded by Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo (1901–1987). [note 1] The basis of Subud is a spiritual exercise called the latihan kejiwaan, which Muhammad Subuh said represents guidance from "the Power of God" or "the Great Life Force."
"Seven Circle" symbol of Subud. Susila Budhi Dharma is a book written by Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, the founder of the World Subud Association, in the city of Jogjakarta, Indonesia, in 1952. Its name corresponds to the three main qualities that are to be developed through the training in the Subud path.
In 1956, Pak Subuh, or "Bapak" as he was called by members of Subud (the word "Bapak" is Indonesian for something akin to father), was invited to England by J. G. Bennett, where many Westerners joined Subud. He was then asked to go to other countries such as the United States and Australia. In this way, Subud spread rapidly around the world.
About twice a week, Subud members go to a local center to participate in a group latihan, men and women separately. [5] The experience takes place in a room or a hall with open space. After a period of sitting quietly, a ' helper ' typically asks the members to stand and relax, and then announces the start of the exercise.
From 1957 he was chairman of the World Subud Association for 25 years. From 1960 to 1965 he was Asian director of the International Press Institute, an organization of editors devoted to promoting the freedom of the press.
The Muhammad Subuh Foundation (MSF) is a charitable foundation named in honor of Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo (called "Bapak"), the founder of Subud. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt body constituted in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Subud is sometimes described as "non-denominational", a curious term which usually refers to religious denominations within Christianity. "Non-sectarian" would probably be most accurate, as within Subud the mixing of religious groups goes hand in hand with the mingling of different ethnic groups from around the world.
The summit was hosted by Ministry of Culture in collaboration with its grantee body International Buddhist Confederation (IBC). [15]Together distinguished scholars, Sangha leaders, and Dharma practitioners from various parts of the world to deliberate on urgent global issues and seek solutions rooted in the universal values of the Buddha Dhamma.
