The Chapel of Saint Paul, which later served as the first Cathedral of Saint Paul, was a log chapel built on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in 1841 by Lucien Galtier. It would serve as the first cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Saint Paul from June 1851 to December 1851. It was also used as a school until it was eventually dismantled.
It is the co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, along with the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. One of the most distinctive cathedrals in the United States , it sits on Cathedral Hill overlooking downtown Saint Paul and features a distinctive copper -clad dome .
