Egbert v. Lippmann, 104 U.S. 333 (1881), was a case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that public use of an invention bars the patenting of it. [1] The Court's ruling was colored by its view that the inventor had forfeited his right to patent the invention by "sleeping on his rights" while others commercialized the technology.
The lower part was a hybrid-corset for the waist and the upper supported the breasts by means of shoulder straps. A patent for the invention was filed in 1889. [ 3 ] The invention, called the "corselet-gorge," was revolutionary, as it literally split the traditional corset in two to provide more comfort.
New products included the rust-proof corset and combination corset and hose-supporter. By 1913 sales reached $7 million and profits averaged $700,000 annually [ 18 ] Two years later, The Warner Brothers Corset Co. paid $1,500 for Mary Phelps Jacob's patent for the brassiere - a move which helped boost revenues to $12.6 million by 1920.
