There are two modes for seam welding: Intermittent and continuous. In intermittent seam welding, the wheels advance to the desired position and stop to make each weld. This process continues until the desired length of the weld is reached. In continuous seam welding, the wheels continue to roll as each weld is made.
In knitting, grafting is the joining of two knitted fabrics using yarn and a needle in one of three types of seams: selvage-to-selvage seam, selvage-to-end ("wales") seam, or; end-to-end ("wale-to-wale") seam. The Kitchener stitch is a common method for the third type of seam. The yarn follows the route of a row of ordinary knitting.
This is a list of welding processes, separated into their respective categories. The associated N reference numbers (second column) are specified in ISO 4063 (in the European Union published as EN ISO 4063 ). [ 1 ]
Sheet metal joints might be made on a seam welding machine where weld purging is carried out automatically as part of the machine design. Where sheet metal is formed into tanks or vessels prior to welding, the inside of the vessel can be purged with a flow of inert gas, however for larger sizes the cost of the gas and the time taken is unrealistic.
A tuck can be created when a previous row is knit together, stitch by stitch, with the present row. This forms a round ridge that projects outwards from the face of the fabric, and is used as a decorative detail. Tuck stitches are created by working in hand knitting by working into the stitch immediately below the next stitch waiting on the needle.
A specialized process called shot welding, can be used to spot weld stainless steel. [44] Seam welding also relies on two electrodes to apply pressure and current to join metal sheets. However, instead of pointed electrodes, wheel-shaped electrodes roll along and often feed the workpiece, making it possible to make long continuous welds.
