The single-story brick building was built in 1894 after the town decided to build a municipal power station. The Romanesque style building was designed by George E. Abbott, and housed power generating equipment until 1925, when it was converted to housing power switching equipment. [2] It now houses municipal offices.

In 1769 the area's first meeting house (church and civic building) was built, giving the area a sense of identity separate from portions of Reading that would later be set off as Wakefield and North Reading. Since then the area has become a focal point for religious and civic institutions in the town. [2]
