The Alaska Highway Veterans is a group of roughly 4,000 segregated African American soldiers in the United States Army Corps of Engineers who helped build the Alaska Highway in 1942. The highway's successful construction is seen by many as an important factor in the 1948 decision to desegregate the military. [1] [2]
The portion of the Alaska Highway in Alaska was planned to become part of the United States Numbered Highway System and to be signed as part of U.S. Route 97 (US 97). In 1953, the British Columbia government renumbered a series of highways to Highway 97 between the U.S. border at Osoyoos, US 97's northern terminus, and Dawson Creek.
Clyde Charles "Slim" Williams (January 14, 1881 – October 9, 1974) was a promoter of the Alaska Highway in the 1930s. Born in California, Willams had first arrived in Alaska in 1900 at the age of 19, looking for adventure. He spent the next three decades trapping, hunting, breeding dogs, and blazing trails throughout the frontier.
Later, he personally directed the creation of the Alaskan Highway, and helped the countries of Central America in building the Inter-American Highway. "[He] was a force as powerful as his counterpart at the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover ," insists historian Stephen B. Goddard, "yet was virtually unknown to most Americans."
Season seventeen of the television program American Experience originally aired on the PBS network in the United States on October 4, 2004 and concluded on May 23, 2005. The season contained 11 new episodes and began with the film RFK.
