Yankee Air Museum purchased the plane for $250,000 in June 1986. After several test hops, the aircraft was flown from Mesa, Arizona, to Willow Run Airport near Ypsilanti, Michigan, on July 2, 1986. It did not fly again for nine years.
After extending the fundraising deadline to Oct. 1, and then to Nov. 1, 2013, on October 26, 2013, RACER Trust and the Yankee Air Museum again reached a new, and final, deadline extension agreement. The final deadline to raise the funds necessary to preserve a portion of the Willow Run plant for the Yankee Air Museum was May 1, 2014. [16]
June 2 – Capt. Jeff "Kooch" Kuss of the Blue Angels died just after takeoff while performing the Split-S maneuver in his F/A-18 Hornet during a practice run for The Great Tennessee Air Show in Smyrna, Tennessee. Capt. Kuss ejected, but his parachute was immediately engulfed in flames, causing him to fall to his death.
In 1951, the United States Air Force exercised a right of return to Willow Run and established Willow Run Air Force Station to the east of the airport runway. On 7 April 1952 the site became operational with the establishment of Headquarters, 30th Air Division at the site, which was designated P-23 by ADC.
