The Lane–Hooven house and its sister building, the Lane Public Library, are located in the German Village Historic District. The Lane–Hooven House was purchased in 1875 by John L. Martin, then president of the Second National Bank of Hamilton. In 1882, the house was sold to Colonel Alexander Gordon, who was born in England in 1840.
Since its founding, the library has occupied several locations, including its current location at Eighth Street and Vine Street. [15] The library collection was originally housed in the Central School on the now defunct Longworth Street. In 1856, the library was moved to the second floor of the Ohio Mechanics' Institute.

As part of the Ohio Common Schools act, passed on 14 March 1853, Board of Education president Rufus King founded a central public library in Cincinnati's Central School. [1] [2] The library was located on Longworth Street, a street which no longer exists. [1]
