The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa is a trade union in South Africa that describes itself as "a voluntary organisation for South African nurses and midwifery professionals". [ 2 ] It was established in its current form on 5 December 1996.
The South African Nursing Council (SANC) was initially established by the Nursing Act, No. 45 of 1944, and currently by the Nursing Act, No. 50 of 1978 as amended. [1] SANC inspects and approves nursing schools and education programs; examines, registers, and enrolls nurses, midwives, and nursing auxiliaries; licenses nursing agencies; and monitors nursing employers.

The union was founded in 1989, when the Hospital Public Servants' Association merged with the Association of Cape Provincial Hospitals, forming the Hospital Personnel Association of South Africa. In 1993, it joined the Federation of South African Labour Unions (FEDSAL), at which time, it had 40,714 members.
