The Moorabool River is a river in Victoria, Australia, which runs for 160 kilometres [1] through several small towns such as Meredith, Anakie, and Staughton Vale. It runs into the Barwon River at Fyansford. It is believed that the name Moorabool derives from an Aboriginal word meaning the cry of a curlew or a ghost. [2]
In 1854, a church and convent were built by Father Peter La Cour near the town's present site. The town began forming in 1878 when Charles Lander Cleveland, a local judge, donated 63.6 acres (257,000 m 2) of land to the Houston East & West Texas Railway (now part of the Union Pacific Railroad) for use as a stop, requesting that the town be named for him.
The town is located in the Shire of Moorabool and on the Geelong-Ballarat railway line, 108 kilometres (67 mi) west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the 2016 census, Lal Lal and the surrounding area had a population of 476. [1] Lal Lal Falls and the Lal Lal Reservoir on the Moorabool River are to the north-east and east of the town. [2] [3]

The site of the mine and blast furnace operation is now a public reserve known as the Lal Lal-Bungal Historic Area, [62] which is also the site of the Bungal Dam on the Western Moorabool River. The main remnant at the site is the ruin of the blast furnace built in 1880 and last used in 1884. [ 27 ]

Batesford is named after Alfred and John Bates who settled here in 1837 at a place where the river could be forded. The township was surveyed in 1854 and was originally named Hopeton after George Hope whose land it formed a part.
