Nantucket (/ ˌ n æ n ˈ t ʌ k ɪ t /) is an island in the state of Massachusetts in the United States, about 30 miles (48 km) south of the Cape Cod peninsula. [1] Together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, it constitutes the Town and County of Nantucket, a combined county/town government.
The government of Nantucket County, which is geographically coterminous with the Town of Nantucket, is operated as a consolidated town and county government — the town selectmen (executive branch) act as the county commissioners. This is the only such example of a true consolidated city-county in New England.
