Jacksboro is a city in Jack County, Texas, in the United States. Its population was 4,184 at the 2020 census. [ 3 ] U.S. Highways 281 and 380 , and Texas State Highways 114 and 199 intersect at Jacksboro, which is the county seat of Jack County.
State Highway 199 was designated on September 18, 1933 from Jacksboro to Olney. [3] On September 26, 1939, SH 199 was extended northwest to Seymour, replacing part of SH 24. On October 30, 1939, SH 199 was extended southeast to Fort Worth, replacing SH 319. On November 25, 1975, the section from Jacksboro to Seymour was transferred to SH 114. [1]
On December 20, 1984, when the district combined several farm to market roads with other ones, FM 4 was extended north to Jacksboro, replacing FM 206. [5] On February 25, 1985, an amendment to the previous request, FM 4 was extended south to then U.S. Highway 81 (now SH 81 ) at Grandview, replacing FM 208 [ 6 ] and FM 110 .

The old route became new SH 175. On January 10, 1945, it was extended further south to near Jacksboro. On December 17, 1945, FM 454 from Bowie southwest 5 miles was cancelled and combined with SH 59. The final extension into Jacksboro was on October 1, 1968, over previous SH 24, which had been rerouted farther south.
The Jack County Courthouse, at 100 N. Main St. in Jacksboro, Texas, was completed in 1940. It was designed in 1939 by Wichita Falls architects Voelker & Dixon. [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. [1]
On August 1, 1941, the section of SH 148 north of Charlie was cancelled and obliterated, as the bridge was destroyed due to flooding. The section north of Petrolia was transferred to FM 810 on August 24, 1948. In 1974, Highway 148 became nationally significant due to its appearance in the movie The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
