The Buzzard Oil Field is an oil field located in the North Sea Blocks 19/10, 19/5a, 20/6 and 20/1s. [1] It was discovered in 2001 by PanCanadian, and developed initially by PanCanadian's successor EnCana and then by Nexen.
In 2001, Nexen formed a joint venture with OPTI Canada Inc. (OPTI) to develop the Long Lake lease using SAGD for in-situ bitumen production and OrCrude technology to upgrade the bitumen to PSC. [3] The first phase of the project received regulatory approval in 2003 and was sanctioned in 2004. Construction at the site began in 2004.
OPTI was founded as Ormat Process Technologies Inc. in 1999 by Israeli energy company Ormat Industries, which had developed the OrCrude process in the 1990s. [1] Ormat was approached by Calgary-based Nexen, who sent a delegation to Israel to supervise a test of the process. [1]
