In the US, there is no minimum barrel length for revolvers or pistols, however in Canada there is so Ruger 4" revolver barrels are now 4.2". I think is has been that way for at least a year. My SR1911 barrel measures exactly 5.055", which is close enough to call it a 5".
BTW, MK IIs were made with a 4" bull barrel, a 4 3/4" tapered barrel, a 5 1/4" tapered barrel, a 6" tapered barrel, a 6 7/8" tapered barrel, a 5 1/2" bull barrel, a 8" "great eight" barrel, and a 10" bull barrel. It turned out to be insufficiently accurate for that game and I got a Dan Wesson 8” 744. I took the Super Redhawk and had the barrel cut to 6”. That strikes me as a good length for it. Tom.
A .357 Vaquero with a 4 5/8" barrel, for example, weighs 43 ounces, while a 7 1/2" Blackhawk in .45 Colt only weighs 42 ounces due to the lighter grip frame and thinner wall thickness in the cylinders and barrel. For close approximate velocities, use the length of rifled barrel to include cartridge length. A good SS firing 22lr with the 4 5/8" barrel and "Poor Boy's" trigger spring mod should be quite capable of holding the 9-ring, or better, offhand. If the OP intends to shoot offhand, the lighter weight short barrel will be much easier to hold during a long session at the range. My Bisley was a gem, but felt like a brick after the first box of 50.
