The Sea Dogs were a group of English privateers and explorers authorised by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England's enemies, whether they were formally at war with them or not. Active from 1560 until Elizabeth's death in 1603, the Sea Dogs primarily attacked Spanish targets both on land and at sea, particularly during the Anglo-Spanish War .

Captain Thomas Fenner (fl.1564 – November 1593) was an Elizabethan era sea captain who served under Francis Drake in the Anglo-Spanish War, notably commanding a warship during the Spanish Armada. Details of Fenner's life are scant, but after leaving military service in about 1589 he may have involved himself in the financing of merchant ships.
Clement Paston (c. 1515–23 – 1597) of Oxnead Hall in Norfolk, was an English sea-captain and served as a Member of Parliament for Norfolk in 1563. Three of his brothers also served as Members of Parliament. Having married a wealthy widow he rebuilt Oxnead Hall, inherited from his father.
