The Brotherton Library is a 1936 Grade II listed Neoclassical building with some art deco fittings, located on the main campus of the University of Leeds.It was designed by the firm of Lanchester & Lodge, and is named after Edward Brotherton, 1st Baron Brotherton, who in 1927 donated £100,000 to the university as funding for its first purpose-built library.
It was ranked the number one public library in the United States among libraries serving populations of more than 500,000 by the Hennen's American Public Library Ratings 2010. [4] In 2022, more than 10 million items were borrowed by its 737,702 cardholders, and 2.99 million visits were made to branches.
The Gypsy, Traveller and Roma Collections comprise collections from different sources acquired by the Brotherton Library at various times. These are curated under a single collection group. Each collection is an outsider’s representation of the communities as the collectors were not Gypsies, Travellers or Roma.
In the 1980s the Camden Public Library in London was finding it difficult to allocate adequate space to their collection of books on food and drink. Their cookery books were advertised and acquired by the Brotherton Library. The books spanned 1900–1975 expanding the historical coverage of the Library's Cookery Collection. [6] [10]

The building is named after Louis Stokes , a former US Congressman who served in Ohio's 11th congressional district from 1968-1998.
