Payson Smith Hall at the University of Southern Maine's Portland campus was named for him in 1960. Payson Smith (February 11, 1873 – March 11, 1963) was an American educator. [1] He served as Superintendent of Schools of Maine from 1907 to 1917 and in that same role (Commissioner of Education) in Massachusetts from 1917 to 1935.
