Beginning in 1985, LCISD began serving middle and high school students from the Kendleton Independent School District (KISD)'s boundaries. [6] KISD and its one school, Powell Point Elementary, were merged into Lamar CISD on July 1, 2010. KISD ceased operations on that date and LCISD began serving elementary students from the former KISD. [7]
The school is part of the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. The school was established in fall 2010 with the intent of relieving the student populations at the other high schools in LCISD. George Ranch High School has approximately 2700 students.

The 2025 Lamar Cardinals football team represents Lamar University in the 2025 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Cardinals play their home games at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont, Texas, and compete in the Southland Conference. They are led by third–year head coach Pete Rossomando.
