While the 68 private medical colleges provide 6040 seats. 6 colleges are run by Bangladesh Armed Forces which offer 375 seats. Admission to the medical colleges is based on merit under the guidelines of PMC. Both the academic performance at the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) (grades 11–12) and an entrance test like NMDCAT determine eligibility for admission to most of the medical colleges. [citation needed]
In 2018, AMC stood first among 39 medical colleges in third year MBBS examination. [citation needed] In 2022, a student of AMC, named Waleed Malik, was awarded 29 gold medals for his performance throughout the course.
