Oglesby was a delegate from Illinois to the Republican National Conventions in 1920, 1924, 1928, and 1932. Oglesby was a delegate to the Illinois convention to ratify the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1933. He died near Elkhart in Logan County, Illinois, and is interred at Elkhart Cemetery.

Elkhart takes its name from Elkhart (or "Elk Heart") Grove, which along with Buffalo Hart was an area of woodland along the Edwards Trace. [7] The grove's name has been attributed to its shape, resembling the heart of an elk. [8] Prior to the forced expulsion of indigenous peoples from Illinois, a Kickapoo village was located at the grove. [9]

Richard James Oglesby (July 25, 1824 – April 24, 1899) was an American soldier and Republican politician from Illinois, who served three non-consecutive terms as Governor of Illinois (from 1865 to 1869, for ten days in 1873, and from 1885 to 1889) and as a United States Senator from Illinois (from 1873 to 1879), and earlier was a member of the Illinois Senate, elected in 1860.
