Alexander Minto Hughes (2 May 1945 – 13 March 1998), [1] better known as Judge Dread, was an English reggae and ska musician. He was the first white recording artist to have a reggae hit in Jamaica, [2] [3] and the BBC has banned more of his songs from radio and television than those of any other recording artist, because of his frequent use of sexual innuendo and double entendres. [3]
The band were named after a short-lived Judge Dredd sub-plot in the sci-fi comic 2000 AD, and were nicknamed "The Black Hole of Rock 'n' Roll". [1] [2] They toured Europe with fellow Leicester band Gaye Bykers on Acid, camping out between gigs. [1] The band were known for burning their hats as part of their live show.
"I Am the Law" was released in 12-inch single format in 1987, with catalog ID 12IS316 from Island Records. Some versions came with a promo poster. It was also the first single for the album, displaying Judge Dredd's badge with band's logo and a US Flag in the background.
