The War Victory Monument and People's Liberation Monument, originally known as the War Victory Monument, was renamed the Chongqing People's Liberation Monument after 1949, or Jiefangbei for short. Jiefangbei consists of a large pedestrian square [1] surrounding the 27.5-meter (90 ft)-tall People's Liberation Monument (celebrating China's victory in World War II). The 25,000 square meters (270,000 sq ft) shopping square is flanked by a large number of large multinational department stores, streetfront luxury boutiques, and upscale restaurants, as well as commercial supertall skyscrapers.
These sites include the People's Liberation Monument, located in the center of Chongqing city. It used to be the highest building in the area, but is now surrounded and dwarfed by numerous shopping centers. Originally named the Monument for the Victory over Axis Armies, it is the only building in China for that purpose. [142]
