Calhoun was named a Silver Medal school in the "Best High Schools" category by U.S. News & World Report in 2009. [2] The Calhoun debate team won the 2008-2009 state debate championship (AA). [3] The Calhoun teams combined for a 9–3 record against other finalists from single-A through triple-A schools, which gave them the AA division title.
Established in 1958, Calhoun is one of three high schools in the Bellmore–Merrick Central High School District, and acts as a magnet school for several programs. As of the 2018–19 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,224 students and 110.6 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.1:1.

The district formed on July 1, 2014, from the merger of the Rockwell City–Lytton Community School District and the Southern Cal Community School District.
