The World Health Organization (WHO) published the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist in 2008 in order to increase the safety of patients undergoing surgery. [1] The checklist serves to remind the surgical team of important items to be performed before and after the surgical procedure in order to reduce adverse events such as surgical site infections or retained instruments. [1]
Led by implementation research teams at the UW, SCOAP was the first to bring advanced operating room checklists to every hospital in the state in 2010. In 2012 this group helped move checklisting from the OR to the surgeon's office by creating Strong for Surgery , an initiative now run in partnership with the American College of Surgeons .
Outside the operating room, or sometimes integrated within, is a dedicated scrubbing area that is used by surgeons, anesthetists, ODPs (operating department practitioners), and nurses prior to surgery. An operating room will have a map to enable the terminal cleaner to realign the operating table and equipment to the desired layout during cleaning.
A hybrid operating room is an advanced surgical theatre that is equipped with advanced medical imaging devices such as fixed C-arms, X-ray tomography (CT) scanners, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. [1] These imaging devices enable minimally-invasive surgery.
Pre-operative, the nurse must help to prepare the patient and operating room for the surgery. During the surgery, they assist the anaesthetist and surgeons when they are needed. The last phase is post-operative, ensuring that the patients are provided with suitable care and treatments.

An operating table system with a stationary column is more stable and more hygienic. The better transport options improve the patient flow from the patient transfer unit and the operating room considerably. Finally, operating table systems with stationary columns enables control elements to be integrated into image procedures, for example ...
High-level HEPA filtration and increasing air changes per hour (ACH) can reduce particulate matter (PM) and bacterial concentrations in the operating room. [ 4 ] The Facility Guidelines Institute recommends using sequential HEPA filters for ORs with a MERV rating of 7 (i.e., captures particle 10 to 3 μm in size) and 14 (i.e., captures ...
