The 1966 USS Oriskany fire was a major fire that broke out aboard the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Oriskany on the morning of 26 October 1966. The fire broke out after a lit flare was locked in a flare locker. The fire killed 44 people, mostly air crew, and injured 156 more.
USS Oriskany (CV/CVA-34), (/ ɔːr ˈ ɪ s k ə n iː / or / ə ˈ r ɪ s k ə n iː /), was one of the few Essex-class aircraft carriers completed after World War II for the United States Navy. The ship was named for the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War. The history of Oriskany differs considerably from that of her sister ships.
A fire killed 44 crewmen on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany in the Gulf of Tonkin, killed 44 crewmen and seriously injured 15 others. Of the dead, 34 were U.S. Navy officers, of whom 24 of them were U.S. Navy pilots.

On 26 October, three members of the squadron were killed in the USS Oriskany fire. From 16 June 1967 to 31 January 1968, VF-111 equipped with F-8Cs was deployed on USS Oriskany. On 31 July F-8C #146993 was hit by an SA-2, the pilot LT Charles Zuhoski ejected successfully, was captured and released on 14 March 1973.
