Gwynn's Island is an island in the Chesapeake Bay and the U.S. state of Virginia, lying off of the Middle Peninsula. A summer colony, the island is located in the northeast part of Mathews County, south of the mouth of the Piankatank River. It is connected to the rest of the county by a swing bridge over Milford Haven.

Gwynn is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mathews County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 Census was 602. [ 2 ] Gwynn is located on Gwynn's Island 5 miles (8.0 km) north-northeast of Mathews .
A small preserve with no public facilities, it is located on the Chesapeake Bay, and contains beach strand and dune communities. It supports a population of the northeastern beach tiger beetle, as well as some scrubland and woodland areas. The preserve was named in honor of William Bell Trower, a Northampton County physician and farmer.
Gwyn claimed to discover Gwynn's Island in c. 1611. [6] According to legend, Gwynn saved Pocahontas from a sinking canoe near the island. [7] At a January 1624 muster, Hugh Wing was listed as aged 30 years. [2] In 1635, Gwyn petitioned King Charles I for ownership of the island and in 1640 was given 1,000 acres (4.0 km 2). [8]
Hurricane-force wind gusts were recorded at multiple locations, with a 91 mph (146 km/h) reading at Gloucester Point and unofficial reports peaking at 107 mph (172 km/h) on Gwynn's Island. [6] Additionally, Chesapeake Light, located 12 miles (19 km) east of Virginia Beach, reported a peak wind gust of 107 mph (172 km/h).
