The northern kata stems from the Shuri-te tradition of karate, and are drawn from Shotokan karate which Oyama learned while training under Gichin Funakoshi. [2] The southern kata stems from the Naha-te tradition of karate, and are mostly drawn from Goju-ryu karate, which Oyama learned while training under So Nei Chu and Gogen Yamaguchi. [1]
The original Shotokan kata syllabus is introduced in Funakoshi's book Karate-do Kyohan, which is the master text of Shotokan karate. Japan Shotokai's kata syllabus is the same as established in "Karate-do Kyohan" with the addition of Gigo Funakoshi's staff kata Matsukaze No Kon. [ 11 ]

In Québec city, a branch of Yoseikan Karate called "Yoseikan Karaté-Do" was founded by Giancarlo Borelli-Lucchesi. The present master is Louise Chevalier, Kyoshi, 8th dan Yoseikan Karaté-do.
