Roseland was founded initially in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1917 by Louis Brecker with financing by Frank Yuengling of the D. G. Yuengling & Son beer family.. In 1919, to escape Philadelphia's blue laws, [7] Brecker and Yuengling moved the venue to 1658 Broadway at 51st Street in Manhattan, [8] on the second floor of that five-story building, opening on December 31, 1919. The New York city location appears in Season 6, Episode 8 of The Venture Bros. where Shore Leave escorts Hank and Dean Venture. They lament the fact that it has become a mall. Basic Instinct (1992) includes a nightclub scene with Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas filmed in Burbank, on a studio set inspired by the club's New York location. [22]
In 1909, the Cosmos Club formed as a club for governesses, leasing space in the Gibson Building on East 33rd Street. [2] The following year, the club became the Women's Cosmopolitan Club, "organized," according to The New York Times, "for the benefit of New York women interested in the arts, sciences, education, literature, and philanthropy or in sympathy with those interested."
The space later held a private club NA opened by actor Chris Noth and his business partner Noel Ashman. [6] Noel Ashman then teamed up with new partners to open semi-private club NA in 2005. Several other clubs opened and closed in the space before the space split into two to become Stash nightclub, which lies underneath Snap Sports Bar.
