Ecuador is a country in western South America, bordering the Pacific Ocean at the Equator, for which the country is named. The city is the core of the Cuenca metropolitan area, which is also made up of nearby rural towns and parishes. The conglomerate also ranks third among Ecuador's conurbations.

Quito has the highest level of tax collection in Ecuador, exceeding the national 57% per year 2009, currently being the most important economic region of the country [citation needed], as the latest "study" conducted by the Central Bank of Ecuador.
