  2. 50-70 Government - Cast Boolits

    castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?28334-50-70-Government

The .50-70 is one of the most inherently accurate calibers I've ever fooled with - not just my rifles, but every .50-70 with a fine bore that I've had the pleasure of shooting. IMO, it is an ignored (and superior) little brother to the .50-90 and .50-140 heavy ordnance.

  3. 50-70 smokeless powder load data - Cast Boolits

    castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?132834-50-70-smokeless-powder-load-data

I've been working up 50-70 loads with IMR 3031 and IMR4198, but I have a pound of 5744 just begging to be loaded. Accurate Arms advises 5744 as a black powder duplicator when loaded at 40% of the black powder weight. So, for your 50-70, try 28 grains of 5744. That works wonderfully well in my 45-70s.

  4. Issues with .50-70 loads and smokeless powder - Cast Boolits

    castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?429828-Issues-with-50-70-loads-and...

The .50-70 Government round with the 450 grain bullet, 12.0 grains Unique. A fired case on the left, the case with the light strike (unfired) on the right. The bullet stuck in the chamber, you can see the unburned Unique powder. The bullet after I got it out, notice there's not a mark on the sides so it didn't go into the rifling very far.

They are 1.032 inches long, vary in width along the seam axis versus 90° from the axis but are nominally 0.515 inch. Couldn't find a sizer. They weigh (average of 10) 469.5 grains (lube removed). Are lubed with something red that doesn't feel like it's going to work for black powder.

AFAIK, the main difference between the Gov't spec and the Shiloh is bullet diameter. Shiloh is nominal .512", whereas Gov't spec is nominal .515". John Wells in PA. Peabody's and Peabody-Martini's wanted. Also shoot a 10-PDR Parrott Rifle in competition.

However, 32 gauge is of a larger diameter. My Starline 50-70 goes .558 at the base and once fired 32 is .565, can't find an unfired case, must have used them all. 50-70 rim is .068, 32 gauge is a shotgun rim of .050. If you're using a die set it may work as sizing down may put the rim against the breech block.

    630. .50-70 Governtment in a Sharps carbine. I have an opportunity to pick up a 1863 Sharps carbine in .50-70 Government or .50 1 3/4 as it's listed on the barrel. The gun is a newer rifle made by Shiloh Sharps. I don't have much experience with the round, I do know from looking I can get dies, ammo and brass fairly easy from Buffalo Arms and a ...

Scroll down half way on the page of this link from my web albums. It show several pictures of 50-70 cases, bullets, and compressed powder that the U.S. Government used, and some were just experimental. Notice the concave or notched bottom on most of the bullets used from the .50 pistol to the .45-70. Both 50-70 & .45-70 bullets were rolled, not ...
