In 1914, Glenkinchie joined Rosebank, St Magdalene, Grange and Clydesdale to form Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) and in 1925 SMD merged with The Distillers Company (DCL). [5] In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors were turned into a museum of malt whisky. [6] Guinness acquired The Distillers Company in 1986. [7]

The region is home to distilleries such as: Annandale in Annan; Auchentoshan near Clydebank; Bladnoch in Galloway; Daftmill in Fife; The Girvan Distilleries near Girvan; and Glenkinchie distillery near Edinburgh.
The Cotswolds Distillery was established in 2014, and was the first full-scale distillery to be located in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Situated in a 5-acre (2 ha) site in Stourton in Warwickshire, its focus is distilling single malt whisky. [citation needed]

In 1914 DCL claimed to be the ‘largest whisky distiller in the world and set up a subsidiary, Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd., [2] In 1919 DCL purchased the totality of John Haig & Co. and in 1925 combined with John Walker & Son and Buchanan - Dewar on a share exchange basis.
