His episcopal ordination was on 26 June 1987. On 23 May 2008 he was appointed as Metropolitan Archbishop of Kota Kinabalu when the diocese was elevated to an archdiocese. [1] He was the president of the Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei Episcopal Commission for Family Life. He officially retired on 24 January 2013 and was succeeded by John Wong Soo Kau.
John Wong was born as the 7th of 11 children (five brothers and five sisters) on 6 June 1968 in Sandakan, Sabah to ethnic Hakka Chinese Catholic parents. His father, Paul Wong Shui Tshun was a hawker selling yong taufu (stuffed bean curd) and fish balls at the Sandakan Central Market, while his mother, Rose Chung Thiem Yin (born 1939) was a housewife.
