Sub-Zero was founded as the Sub-Zero Freezer Company on August 20, 1945 by Westye F. Bakke in Madison, Wisconsin. [2] In 2000, it acquired the domestic appliance line of the Wolf Range Corporation, [3] a California-based manufacturer of professional-style ranges, cooktops and grills for both home and commercial use.
In 1936, 60% of the company was bought by Sears, Roebuck, and Co. with the rest of its stock being purchased by the Florence Stove Company. For three years, the company name was the Florence-Wehrle Company, later being renamed to the Newark Stove Company in 1939. At that point, the company was the largest stove producer in the world. [2]
In 1887, the Favorite Stove & Range Company moved to Piqua, Ohio, from Cincinnati, Ohio. The firm became Piqua's largest manufacturer. The company focused primarily on the manufacture of stoves and stove parts throughout its history, though it also produced several lines of mid-priced cast-iron pans from the 1910s through the 1930s.
George D. Roper became the sole owner of the Van Wie Gas Stove company after the company's debts were paid off on September 1, 1894.10 days later, a fire destroyed the facility. The factory was rebuilt and renamed as the Eclipse Gas Stove Company, and later expanded to include the Trahern Pump Company, found in 1857 and acquired in 1906. [3]
In 1902, the company had about 20 employees. The average price of its ranges was about $60 ($2,100 in 2023 dollars), which was about twice the selling price of the typical range of the time. Despite the high price, the ranges sold well as they were recognized as being a much better quality and easier to use than the typical range sold at the time.
