Born in Skewen, Richards attended Neath Grammar School and was a Welsh Schools representative cricketer, later playing cricket for the Glamorgan 2nd XI. He went on to study at Swansea University, during which time he played rugby for Neath, then attended Jesus College, Cambridge, winning a blue in the 1955 Varsity Match.
It is located below street level at Station Road in Skewen, 210 miles 26 chains (338 km) from London Paddington (via Stroud). [1] It is a stop on the South Wales Main Line , served by Transport for Wales Swanline regional trains between Swansea and Cardiff, which typically run every two hours.
Skewen is also the birthplace of internationally successful singer Bonnie Tyler and Welsh composer David John de Lloyd (1883-1948). Comedian Eddie Izzard lived in the village for a short time during childhood. [1] The grandparents of the legendary American entrepreneur Howard Hughes are believed to have lived in Skewen in the 1930s.

The track was started in the 1930s and opened by Will Thomas on the field, around the same time as the adjacent Tennant Park which was built in 1936 for Skewen RFC. In 1967 the track added a football pitch inside the greyhound circuit and Neath Athletic FC became tenants, changing their name to Skewen Athletic (now called Neath F.C).

In order to meet the ground criteria (an enclosed ground was needed) [1] they moved to the Greyhound Stadium in Skewen and changed their name to Skewen Athletic. After a number of seasons they moved to Tennant Park. The 2002–03 season saw the club finish as Welsh Football League Division Three runners–up on goal difference to Pontyclun. [3]
