The Church of the Assumption is a Roman Catholic church within George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Established following the founding of George Town in 1786, it is the third oldest Catholic church in Malaysia. [1] The church was also the seat of the bishop of Penang from 1955 to 2003.

The church was completed in July 2010 and the opening ceremony was held on 29 September 2010. It will be the first time in 41 years that a new Catholic church is built on Penang Island. On 29 September 2013, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit was split to form a new parish, Church of Divine Mercy.
On 7 July 2012, Benedict XVI appointed Francis the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Penang. [3] [2] He received his episcopal consecration on 20 August 2012 at St Anne’s Church in Bukit Mertajam [4] from Archbishop Murphy Nicholas Xavier Pakiam, with Bishops Antony Selvanayagam and Paul Tan Chee Ing serving as co-consecrators.
