The institution was founded as the Indian Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad as a foundation for the 20 Indian Institutes of Information Technology under the same model, which was renamed to International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad in 2001, when it attained a status of a deemed university. The IITH campus is on a land area of 576 acres (234 ha). Despite being called IIT Hyderabad, its campus is about 60 km from the main city.
