The Munich–Rosenheim railway is a 65 kilometre-long double-track main line of the German railways.It connects Munich Hauptbahnhof with Rosenheim station, where it connects with the Rosenheim–Salzburg railway, which connects with the line to Vienna at Salzburg, and the line to Kufstein, which continues to Innsbruck and the Brenner line to Italy.
The Western Railway consists of the double-track Old Western Railway (Alten Westbahn, line 1) and the double-track New Western Railway (Neuen Westbahn, line 30).For operational reasons the Western Railway is supplemented by the suburban track (line 23) from Vienna Hütteldorf to Unter Purkersdorf and the relief track (line 3) from Pottenbrunn via St. Pölten to Prinzersdorf.
The 90 line connects Munich with Vienna and Budapest every two hours. At the weekend, a train pair is extended via Stuttgart to Frankfurt, although Günzburg is served only by trains running towards Frankfurt.
In Austria, the Western Railway line is to be extended to reduce travel time between Munich, Salzburg, Linz, and Vienna to one hour each. Westbahnhof is one of the busiest stations in Vienna and used to be one of the several termini for international trains in the city.
