The Shapla Square protests, also known as the siege of Dhaka, Operation Shapla, Operation Flash Out by security forces, [2] was the protests and subsequent shootings of 5 and 6 May 2013 at Shapla Square, located in the Motijheel district, the main financial area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. [4]
Motijheel lies directly adjacent to Paltan and Segunbagicha. The Ramna area was the colonial part of Dhaka which developed in the early 20th century. Motijheel, which was once the property of the nawab of Dhaka, was a garden situated between Ramna and Old Dhaka. Motijheel Thana covers an area of 3.69 square kilometres (1.42 sq mi).

Shapla Square in Dhaka. Shapla Square (Bengali: শাপলা চত্বর, Shapla Chottor) is a huge sculpture at the heart of Motijheel near the center of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It depicts a Shapla (water lily, the species Nymphaea nouchali), the national flower of Bangladesh. The sculpture is surrounded by a fountain. [1]
